Stress and Adrenal Support

Protocol development in integrative medicine is not typically a simple process. Individuals require individualized care, and what works for one patient may not work for another.

To establish these protocols, we first developed a Rating Scale that could be used to discern the rigor of evidence supporting a specific nutrient’s therapeutic effect.

The following protocols were developed using only A through C-quality evidence.

A
Systematic review or meta-analysis of human trials
B
RDBPC human trials
2+ studies and/or 1 study with 50 + subjects
C
RDBPC human trials
1 study

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

300mg, total per day, minimum 8 weeks1,2

  • Ashwagandha safely improved resistance to stress in individuals2

Panax ginseng

960-2000mg, total per day, minimum 4 weeks7,8

  • Numerical rating scale (NRS) score, a self-assessment of fatigue severity, was improved7
  • Panax has shown to reduce circulating cortisol while increasing enzymatic and nonspecific antioxidant activity in response to physical stress8
  • Dosing of 2000 mg per day improved the visual analogue scale (VAS) results7
  • Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were lowered and a dosing of 1000 mg increased GSH concentration and activity7
