Each year, thousands of providers take education courses and receive certification to practice functional medicine, but the majority of physicians never fully establish a profitable practice. Why?
There are many reasons, but here are the most common roadblocks:
- Many providers are straddling two worlds. They have one foot in thir hospital or clinic job full-time, and they just don’t have the bandwidth or time to create a practice.
- Some providers joined mentorships run by non-physicians who taught a way that, while great in many ways, just doesn’t work for physicians.
- They want to do it the right way (most are risk-averse), but they have a hard time sifting through the conflicting advice out there… Can I practice across state lines? Am I operating as a PCP now (I don’t want to do that)? What if I became a health coach? Can I open up virtually that way?

Linda Matteoli, D.O. is the CEO and Founder of Origins Incubator. She started her functional medicine practice, Origins Functional Medicine, in 2015. After some early attempts with fee-for-service and programs, she developed a unique, successful membership model that intertwined quality of life, patient satisfaction and financial stability. Upon switching to the new model, her practice grew from 5 members to 100 members in 12 months and quickly developed a months-long waiting list. Other providers took notice and began asking if she could mentor them on how to make their practices successful. Those private coaching calls turned into three-day workshops and eventually, an online mentorship with personalized attention for each physician. After bringing in experts to add a complete clinical curriculum and case study component taught by international speaker Dr. Cheryl Burdette, N.D., and to add legal documents and guidance from Scott Rattigan, J.D. from Functional Lawyer, she has created a fully integrative mentorship program (Origins Incubator) that provides physicians with the support and guidance they need to successfully launch and grow their own thriving practices.
