Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate contains the metabolically active form of vitamin B6, which functions as a coenzyme in more than one hundred enzymatic reactions and is the major form of vitamin B6 found in the body. Dietary vitamin B6 must be converted in the liver to pyridoxal-5-phosphate before being used in biochemical processes. Pyridoxal-5-phosphate helps to catalyze the metabolism of amino acids, carbohydrates, fats, sphingoid bases and neurotransmitters. Vitamin B6 is also a cofactor for heme biosynthesis and can affect homocysteine concentrations in the blood. Large doses of pyridoxal-5-phosphate can be absorbed at one time. Oral supplementation with pyridoxal-5-phosphate can prevent vitamin B6 deficiency, which is associated with impaired platelet function and clotting mechanisms.
