Saccharomyces Boulardii 10 Billion

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition with an abnormally high number of bacteria growing in the small intestine, causing symptoms such as bloating, gas, and altered bowel habits. Saccharomyces boulardii is a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a probiotic yeast.

It helps prevent bacterial adhesion to intestinal cells and suppresses bacterial overgrowth. SIBO is treated with antibiotics; however, because S. boulardii is a yeast, it is unaffected by antibiotics and can be used alongside them to help restore a healthy microbiome. Preclinical studies have shown that S. boulardii supports regeneration of the intestinal microbiota, following antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

It could also promote a favourable gut flora by inhibiting pathogenic bacterial growth, reducing pathogen adhesion to intestinal cells, and degrading bacterial toxins from Escherichia coli O55B5, Clostridioides difficile, and cholera toxin. In a mouse model of human microbiota, researchers studied the effects of S. boulardii on both bacterial and fungal composition.

During antibiotic treatment, S. boulardii had only short-term effects on fungal populations, ending when it was cleared from the gut. However, S. boulardii facilitated the return of the initial bacterial equilibrium when taken during antibiotic use and for seven days afterward. Studies have also shown that S. boulardii significantly decreases TNF-alpha and IL-8 proinflammatory cytokines.

In a meta-analysis of 27 randomized, placebo-controlled trials involving 5,029 participants, S. boulardii was found to be significantly effective in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Participants taking S. boulardii had a 53% decrease in relative risk compared to individuals taking placebo
