Lifestyle recommendations

  1. Sleep soundly: Our body recovers the most when it is asleep, and this is because the immune system is much more active at this time. Making sure you get enough quality sleep goes a long way in making sure your immune system is functioning optimally.
  2. Exercise frequently, but not too much: Research supports exercise for improving overall immune function; however, extreme daily exercise will eventually begin to have the opposite effect.
  3. Reduce Stress: Stress brings everything down, including the immune system. Studies have found improvements in people’s immune function with stress-relieving activities like meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises.
  4. Increase hydration: Be sure to stay hydrated with pure filtered water and not sugar-sweetened beverages. Healthy hydration is an important requirement for the body to keep it from becoming weakened and thus susceptible to disease.
  5. Remove environmental allergens: Especially in the house, ensuring clean carpets and bedding, and using HEPA filters all reduce allergenic loads, which can tax the immune system.

Dietary recommendations

  1. Ditch the sugar: Too much sugar can increase inflammation and can hinder the immune system’s ability to fight infection when in excess.
  2. Enjoy fermented foods: Fermented foods are a perfect way to support healthy gut flora, which in turn work with and support the immune system.
  3. Spice things up: Thyme, garlic, onions, ginger, turmeric, cayenne, and rosemary are just some of the spices that each have their own research supporting their ability to keep the immune system functioning optimally.
  4. Cut out alcohol: The research is conclusive that alcohol consumption lowers our overall immune function. When trying to boost the immune system, be sure to avoid any alcohol for best results.
