Stress and Cardiovascular Disease

Stress and its sequelae can be a leading contributor to the initiation and promotion of cardiovascular disease. Stress in moderate amounts is actually beneficial for health. However, excessive stress occurring over a prolonged period can have devastating effects on our health. In reality, it is not the stress itself that can affect our health, but it is how our body deals with the stress which is the real cause of our ill health. Stress can have many effects on our body (such as affecting our sleep patterns; increasing blood pressure; changing our eating behaviour; increases muscle pain; depletes energy storage leading to a feeling of tiredness, and causes arterial narrowing which can be dangerous in individuals with plaque buildup). In many cases, we cannot avoid the situations that is causing the stress in our life, the next best thing is to deal with the effects of stress on our body.
