NSF Certified for Sport

The NSF Certified for Sport is a third party certification program designed specifically for sport supplements to ensure products do not contain unsafe levels of contaminants, prohibited substances and masking agents. The program is recognized by several organizations including the NFL, NFL Players Association, MLB, MLB Players Association, PGA, LPGA and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sports.

Product Certification

NSF tests products for more than 270 substances banned by most major athletic organizations including narcotics, steroids, stimulants, hormones and related substances such as diuretics, beta-2-agonists, and other masking agents.

To receive and maintain certification, each manufacturer and product must have undergone a toxicology review, facility inspection, and annual laboratory testing.

The toxicology review involves:

  • Label and formulation review and comparison
  • Ingredient review
  • Determination of product testing

The facility inspection involves:

  • A good manufacturing practices (GMP) audit of production facilities
  • A review that no banned substances are stored or manufactured at the facility
  • Observations of in-house laboratories
  • A review of sourcing and traceability procedures
  • Schedule of ingredient supplier audits based on number of suppliers

The annual laboratory testing and analysis involves verification of:

  • Label content
  • Microbiological
  • Heavy metals
  • Pesticides/herbicides
  • Disintegration
  • Banned substances based on number of lots

NSF certified products are audited twice annually, subject to marketplace sampling and monitored for changes in the formulation and supplier of ingredients.
