Friend of the Sea (FOS)

Friend of the Sea (FOS) is a non-governmental organization founded as a means to conserve marine habitat. The FOS third-party certification for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture certifies seafood (wild and farmed), omega-3 fish oils and other products including fishmeal and fish feed.

Product Certification

Friend of the Sea certification requirements follows the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) guidelines for the eco-labeling of fish and fishery products from marine capture fisheries, including the protections of “stocks under consideration” to ensure certain stocks are not overfished. The audit is carried out by independent certifying bodies using FOS criteria. More information on FAO guidelines can be found here.
