Vitamin B12-fortified toothpaste improves vitamin status in vegans

A recent article has indicated that using vitamin B12-fortified toothpaste can help patients following a vegan diet maintain or improve serum and plasma levels of vitamin B12. The study followed 66 subjects over a 12-week period, This research demonstrates that application of vitamin B12 to the oral cavity corrects deficiency and is an effective form of administration.

These findings are reflected in an older study that demonstrated oral administration of vitamin B12 in a tiered schedule is equivalent to intramuscular administration when patients are deficient.

Based on this research, oral cavity application or oral ingestion of vitamin B12 supplementation may be effective in raising serum and plasma vitamin B12 levels in deficient patients.
